Family Center

The purpose of the Kit Carson Family Engagement Policy is to ensure that every family is involved to the maximum extent possible in their children's education and their school.

Annual "Open House"

Kit Carson will hold its annual “Open House” during the first month of school. "Open House" will include Title I information such as: Kit Carson's AYP (school grade), families rights and responsibilities under Title I, Title I funding, and Title I Q&A opportunity for families. All families will be invited and will be introduced to all upcoming school events and school programs that will allow families to participate in and give them the opportunity to be involved with their children’s

Volunteer Opportunities

Families will be encouraged to submit a background check to become a volunteer. Families will be invited to create and participate in Family Engagement Goal Teams. Goal Teams will be set up by families according to area of need for student success.The Family Center will conduct and facilitate an annual meeting where all families are encouraged to share and provide input when revising the Family Engagement Policy, Title I school compact and planning of family events occurring at Kit Carson.


All information and invitations sent to families will be in English and Spanish. Kit Carson Elementary school will use various forms of communication such as the automated phone system, fliers, marquise, personal phone calls, newsletters, (classroom newsletter, principal newsletter, and Family Resource Center "Upcoming Events") & the Kit Carson website. The Kit Carson website lists all staff member’s classroom extensions so that families may communicate with teachers when information is needed about their children and any school information. Kit Carson will hold monthly meetings (Breakfast with the Principal), monthly family curriculum nights, (Family Math, Reading, & Science Nights), and various monthly family engagement workshops, that will include and address Kit Carson curriculum and State and District assessments. Information about assessments will also be explained at Parent/Teacher conferences and in the teacher's monthly newsletter.

Collaborate With The Community

Kit Carson collaborates with community-based programs, including health and human service providers, to ensure that the parents and families have the resources they need to be involved in their children’s education, growth and development.
Kit Carson will ensure that family involvement will include any and all programs that their children are participating in including Juntos, Evenstart PreK, and NM State PreK.

  • Take responsibility for my school work, actions, and behavior.
  • Be respectful to all staff, parents, and school volunteers.Have good school attendance, be on time, be in uniform, and be ready to work everyday.
  • Ask for help from my parents and teachers when I don't understand something.
  • Complete all homework assignments and read nightly.

Teacher's Pledge: I will...

  • Always conduct myself in a courteous and professional manner
  • Provide a challenging curriculum with high standards and expectations in academics and behavior which meets all student's needs.
  • Keep families informed of their child's progress through progress reports and classroom newsletters.
  • Provide students with encouragement and an opportunity to succeed.
  • Create avenues of communication that are easily understood by parents.
  • Follow the district policy of responding within 48 hours, if not sooner.

Parent's Pledge: I will...

  • Provide a caring home environment
  • Teach my child the value of respecting self, others, and property. Teach my child appropriate behavior and good manners.
  • Make sure my child attends school and is on time every day. I am aware that the school day starts promptly at 7:45 daily. When my child is absent I will contact the attendance line to excuse the absence.
  • Be involved in my child's education, which includes reading with my child every night and completing homework.
  • Read all the information that the school sends home and keep an updated phone number in the front office.
  • Seek the school and community resources that support the well being of my child.
  • Make sure that my child arrives daily in proper Kit Carson uniform.

Administrator's Pledge: I will...

  • Create avenues of communication that are easily understood, informative, and convenient between school and home.
  • Act as an instructional leader by supporting teachers in their classrooms.
  • Create a welcoming atmosphere for students and families.
  • Involve families in the educational process by educating families on common core standards and state and district assessments.
  • Follow the district policy of responding to families concerns within 48 hours, if not sooner.
